A curator, from the latin curare meaning « take care », is an overseer . Traditionally, a keeper of an institution’s heritage (responsible for an institution’s collections), he is also in charge of conveying the artworks, administering the loans and preserving them. Nowadays, his role has developed and improved to become the one of exhibition’s organizer. But he is above all the link between the intellectual and technical part of an exhibition, the one who imagines the exhibition.
For the famous curator Harald Szeemann, the idea of the exhibition was an art form in itself. In the same way as an artist who can only express his individual freedom within a group, the artworks only takes on meaning in relation to each other. This dialectic of pieces of art, between order and disorder, rational and supernatural, didactics and freedom is at the heart of the commissioner’s role.
